truth is, the vast majority of these floor scales are not what
they are hyped to be. Many aren't even 4' x 4', they're 44"x44"
or 47"x47". And that is just the top plate. Once you
measure the actual supported frame, the "4x4" that you
just bought is now really a 46" x 46". Wonder
what else they're telling you or not telling you? The same thing
could be true for 2' x 2' floor scales. The odds are the underside
would be substantially less than 24" wide. By the way, who
manufacturers these floor scales? Are they built in the United
States OR are they built and calibrated overseas and then imported
by the hundreds, & stored in a container? Who is in charge
of the quality control of these $400 4x4 floor scales? Don't get
confused, the floor scales we are talking about on this page are
larger four foot wide decks with large capacity like five thousand
pounds, not something small like the adam cpwplus l floor scales
which are much more compact.
the past few months we have had customers bringing us "no
name" floor scales with "no name indicators that have
broken. The manuals that come with the scale are basically useless
unless you can read chinese. We have had people calling us and
saying that they bought this ultra cheap floor scale but now it
won't calibrate. Worse yet, the manual that came with the scale
might as well have been written in chinese. These are true stories.
Fact is, we've seen some of these "auction floor scales"
in person and the ones we have been able to inspect have some
serious issues. Things like proprietary components that can only
be replaced by specifc parts that have to be sent from overseas.
That means more money you are going to have to spend and time
you are going to waste waiting for parts to arrive. Also, we have
seen scrap pieces of steel used to form the side frame of the
scale with welds right in the middle of the scale. Not an ideal
situation at all no matter if you're buying floor scales in Toledo
or floor scales in Miami. We're starting to see some of the same
things happening with stainless steel floor scales too by the
way. Sometimes it almost seems like you're better off buying antique
floor scales since the modern one's have a lot of tricky buying
on our years of experience (at this time we've been in business
going on 30 years) we think you're better off in the long run
buying one of our QUALITY floor scale systems. Sure, it will probably
be a little more expensive but we only try to sell QUALITY floor
scales by brand name reputable scale manufacturer's that you've
probably heard of like Ohaus floor scales, Pennsylvania floor
scales, Detecto floor scales, and Avery Weigh-Tronix. In most
cases, we ship the floor scales direct to you from the factory
since the freight costs can add up. These names above you can
trust as leaders in the industry. Interested in some of the latest
technology like wireless floor scales and ethernet floor scales,
they are available.
We know where our floor scales are made and we know who made them.
BONUS! You can actually read the manual that comes with the scale!
learned over the years what brands we trust and what brands that
we stay away from. Some of these scales we see on the market don't
even have a "brand". Wonder who actually constructs
them or for that matter who fulfills the warranty?
Supports Work Like Rigid I-Beams
How is the scale built? Is the structure solid or will it deflect?
To minimize deflection and stress under load, the scales
structural supports should function in the same manner as I-beams;
the scales deck plate acts as the compression flange and
is connected by a vertical web to the bottom portion of the support
that functions as a tension flange. An I-beam efficiently puts
the material where it is most needed, in the top and bottom flanges.
Scale structures should be designed with that principle in mind.
Unfortuantely, many of the "internet specials" that
you see on the web don't stack up to the Roughdeck.
designs used in popular low-profile scales are shown above:
A uses double flat bar stock in
a central X with a single flat bar around the
perimeter. This design lacks intermediate supports to prevent
the top plate dishing in the triangularshaped areas, and
the entire platform tends to deflect excessively from loads
placed toward the center of one edge.
Scale B uses 2" x 2" tube supports and
is more rigid in one direction than in the other. This design
also leaves a large unsupported area at the center of the
deck prone to dishing.
The RoughDeck design is equally rigid in both directions
and provides good support to the top plate both along each
edge and through the center. Intermediate supports are added
to reduce unsupported areas that might otherwise result
in the top plate dishing under heavy point loads.
